challengelogo

I am participating in the 2015 Edublogs Teacher Challenge
http://teacherchallenge.edublogs.org/personal-blogging/

This series is for educators who want to have their own personal blog where they document their learning, share their teaching practices or use to create a portfolio of their work.
Each week I will be sent emails consisting of a link to the content to read, as well a task to complete as part of the challenge.

Step 8 which is the final step relates to Creating and using Video

For this step I  found a You tube video about Persona Dolls from Amaze Persona Dolls

I was able to embed the video in the blog by using Add Media – Insert a You Tube video or by inserting the embed code

Amaze persona dolls video

https://youtu.be/DL5zQjWIm7g

Powtoon

I also created a video introducing my persona Dolls using the free version of Powtoon which I found enjoyable and easy to use.

I was able to embed the video in my blog but it appears as a link rather than the same appearance as the You Tube video.

2015 Edublogs Teacher Challenge Step 7

challengelogo

I am participating in the 2015 Edublogs Teacher Challenge
http://teacherchallenge.edublogs.org/personal-blogging/

This series is for educators who want to have their own personal blog where they document their learning, share their teaching practices or use to create a portfolio of their work.
Each week I will be sent emails consisting of a link to the content to read, as well a task to complete as part of the challenge.

Step 7 relates to Cool Tools to Embed

For this step I have included  SlideShares in two posts
https://jofreitag.wordpress.com/2015/05/12/australia-e-series-tech-talk-tuesdays-webinar/

https://jofreitag.wordpress.com/2015/06/07/australia-e-series-tech-talk-tuesdays-webinar-part-2/

I was able to embed these without any problem.

However I had problems with embedding some other tools which I created.
By following the instructions I could make a link appear but the program was not embedded.
I am wondering whether it is to do with something in the settings of my blog?

I created a Fotobabble of Bearnice at http://www.fotobabble.com/m/d2tZRDhJYStGTU09 and tried to include it without much success in the post https://jofreitag.wordpress.com/2015/01/28/bearnice/

I created a Voicethread to connect with teachers and practitioners asking for feedback about how they would use this particular set of persona dolls.
It can be found at https://voicethread.com/share/6896802/

As with Fotobabble I did not have any success with getting the Voicethread to embed The post in which the link to the Voicethread was included is https://jofreitag.wordpress.com/2015/06/22/feedback-sought/

I created a Voki to introduce the blog at http://www.voki.com/pickup.php?scid=11559863&height=267&width=200
I had no success in getting the Voki embedded in the sidebar of the blog.

I liked Popplet and will add Popplet Lite to the iPad

I made a Padlet at http://padlet.com/jo_freitag14/aulwav7rrkl3

The link to the Padlet is included in the post Feedback sought https://jofreitag.wordpress.com/2015/06/22/feedback-sought/

A persona doll is a doll developed by a practitioner/educator to enable children to gain an awareness and understanding of the richness and diversity of different backgrounds and lifestyles as well as to help children learn strategies for dealing with unfairness against themselves and others.

The dolls are given personalities, family and cultural backgrounds, likes and dislikes and the stories that are created around them enable children to explore positive and negative emotions.

Persona dolls can be used by teachers, psychologists and counsellors for education play therapy or professional development.
My set of Persona dolls represent various profiles and aspects of gifted students.

How would you utilize this set of dolls in your classroom or practice?

Please would you be so kind as to visit and leave a comment by voice, video or text on my Voicethread at https://voicethread.com/share/6896802/

Or you could visit my Padlet and leave a sticky note comment for me there at http://padlet.com/jo_freitag14/aulwav7rrkl3

2015 Edublogs Teacher Challenge Step 6

I am participating in the 2015 Edublogs Teacher Challenge

http://teacherchallenge.edublogs.org/personal-blogging/

This series is for educators who want to have their own personal blog where they document their learning, share their teaching practices or use to create a portfolio of their work.
Each week I will be sent emails consisting of a link to the content to read, as well a task to complete as part of the challenge.

Step 6 relates to Images, Copyright and Creative Commons

Images form a very important part of blog posts for me.
Images for my new blog, Personas Profiles and Portraits, will probably mostly be my own photographs or images I have created to ensure that I am the owner of the images.
Photos for Personas , Profiles and Portraits are taken either with the camera or iPad and are modified using MS Paint, PhotoFiltre or AShampoo Photo Commander.

The images which I create for my Sprite’s Site blog are usually made in MS Paint, sometimes incorporating clip art images or my own photos.
Many years ago I did purchase three CD collections of public domain clip art and the original image of the character of Sprite came from one of these clip art CDs.

I used to include images from the PowerPoint collection but I have found that in some cases images which used to be included in that collection are no longer available.
In 2014 I participated in INKtober
drawing challenge by doing one ink drawing a day the entire month. I drew almost all the characters from Sprite’s Site in ink during that month and it has provided an extra set of images for Sprite’s Site.
Sprite’s Site blog celebrates its birthday in June and I often use that and Christmas as opportunities to depict the full set of characters. It is becoming harder as the number of characters increases. The header for Sprite’s Site blog shows the Birthday gathering from 2012.
Below is the 2015 gathering – some of the groups are missing from the picture.

The Twitter birds on Sprite’s Site were adapted from  birds in a set of free Twitter Bird icons available at www.productivedreams.com
Twitter Bird Bowers have been set up on Sprite’s Site to house the 100 plus musicians, poets, scientists and pirates

I mostly use MS Paint to create my images but sometimes I also use PowerPoint or Scratch for rotating or modifying the images and sometimes I use other drawing programs such as ArtRage or Autodesk Sketchbook. If I am using the iPad I create images in Drawing Desk, Sketches Pro, Art Set or Paper 53 and send the images to Dropbox.

To create animated GIFs I use Coffee Cup Animation Studio or Giftedmotion 1-2-3 Jar
Here are some animated GIFs I created
https://spritessite.wordpress.com/2010/07/01/a-topiary-tessellation-bird-leaf-tree-for-all-seasons/
https://spritessite.wordpress.com/2012/12/14/pa-rum-pa-pa-pum/
https://spritessite.wordpress.com/2009/11/20/memory-elephant-usb-morph/
I do use Scratch for animation but have not used it for the blog as yet. I enjoy using cartoon creation programs such as MakeBeliefsComix and ToonDoo

makebeliefs

And I also enjoy using Avatar makers and Flash Face
https://spritessite.wordpress.com/2011/03/05/avatar-album/
https://spritessite.wordpress.com/2012/04/05/avatar-album-2/
On Sprite’s Site blog I sometimes use Tag cloud generators such as Wordle or Mindmapping tools such as Inspiration, Tony Buzan’s iMindMap, Mindjet, Spicy Nodes and bubbl.us and I can imagine using those on Personas Profiles and Portraits as well
An example of the use of Mindmapping can be seen at
https://spritessite.wordpress.com/2010/11/23/imaginational-dabrowski-counsel-for-the-defence-2/

http://teacherchallenge.edublogs.org/personal-blogging/

This series is for educators who want to have their own personal blog where they document their learning, share their teaching practices or use to create a portfolio of their work.
Each week I will be sent emails consisting of a link to the content to read, as well a task to complete as part of the challenge.

Step 5 relates to Widgets
After looking at the recommended blogs I found that I have already included several of the widgets they use but I did find a few more that I would like to add.
These were
avatar
share my blog with your network
visit my other blogs
awards/badges
tweets

I have now added these
My gravatar image
Facebook Like widget
Follow button
Twitter app

Widgets that I would consider to be essential ‘must haves’ are search, tag clouds and archives. Recent posts and recent comments and others are useful and contribute to the appearance of the blog.

2015 Edublogs Teacher Challenge Step 4

challengelogo

I am participating in the 2015 Edublogs Teacher Challenge
http://teacherchallenge.edublogs.org/personal-blogging/

This series is for educators who want to have their own personal blog where they document their learning, share their teaching practices or use to create a portfolio of their work.
Each week I will be sent emails consisting of a link to the content to read, as well a task to complete as part of the challenge.

Step 4 relates to Connecting with others

  1. My Twitter handle is @jofrei
I love Twitter and particularly enjoy participating in the weekly chat session on the hashtag #gtchat. All the information, links and blog posts referenced during the chat later posted on the GT Chat blog http://globalgtchatpoweredbytagt.wordpress.com/
I notify my newly posted blog entries on Twitter adding the hashtags of the main groups I follow and I find that most of the posts by other people that I follow are announced on Twitter.
  2. I have now loaded Flipboard onto my iPad and will have a play with it when time permits. I can see that it could be a very useful tool.
At present I choose to find blog posts to read and comment on via Facebook, Twitter and especially via blog hops such as Gifted Homeschoolers Forum monthly Blog Hop http://giftedhomeschoolers.org/blogs/blog-hop/ HoagiesGifted monthly Blog Hop http://www.hoagiesgifted.org/blog_hops.htm and the annual New Zealand Gifted Awareness Week Blog Hop.
  3. A PLN is such a valuable asset for any educator and posting on a blog and commenting on the blogs of other people is a great way of connecting with them to share information and encouragement.
Flipboard is a new tool for me to add to my toolbox.
I could add share icons to my blog and will look into doing it (I think I might learn about that in the next step of this challenge)

I have found a few more Twitter contacts via this step of the challenge and read a few blog posts from challenge participants.
One which  I particularly enjoyed was a post on Mrs. McNally’s Mumblings
http://mcnallymumblings.edublogs.org/2015/05/07/10-things-your-teacher-wants-for-teacher-appreciation-week/
This is the comment I left for her
I just love your mumblings about how your students can show you their appreciation! I particularly like that you want primarily for them to be happy and engaged in their learning!

2015 Edublogs Teacher Challenge Step 3

challengelogo

This month I am participating in the 2015 Edublogs Teacher Challenge
http://teacherchallenge.edublogs.org/personal-blogging/

This series is for educators who want to have their own personal blog where they document their learning, share their teaching practices or use to create a portfolio of their work.
Each week I will be sent emails consisting of a link to the content to read, as well a task to complete as part of the challenge.

STEP 3 related to writing posts

Here is my STEP 3 RESPONSE

Q1. I watched Steve Wheeler’s You Tube video. http://bit.ly/1SBX3Ry
The main themes were
Blogging is a public form of communication – open and accessible to all – a global audience
It is maybe the most important form of unchoreographed discourse available to us at the moment
It takes time to build your audience
It could be said “Never has so much been written by so many to be read by so few”
Blogging clarifies your thinking and allows your topic to be discussed in public debate which then further clarifies your thinking

Q2. I listened to the Voicethread Advice to new bloggers at http://voicethread.com/myvoice/#thread/2130309/11372320/32254226

If I were going to leave a comment it would be
Hi! This is Jo Freitag from Victoria, Australia

At present I have 3 blogs for different purposes

  1. Gifted Resources blog the blog for my information service for teachers, parents and service providers of gifted students
    https://giftedresources.wordpress.com/
  2. Sprite’s Site blog based on a cartoon character Sprite who is a gifted student who also has learning difficulties and a collection of characters such as the Memory elephant and the overexcitable Dabrowski dogs
    http://spritessite.wordpress.com/
  3. Personas profiles and portraits which is my new blog about the creation of a set of persona dolls representing profiles of gifted students and their background stories.
    https://jofreitag.wordpress.com/

My advice to first time bloggers is to choose to blog about a topic which you are passionate about or information you would like to share

Comment on other people’s blogs and share the links to your posts on Twitter using the hashtags of the groups you follow

Participating in global projects and blog hops on specific subjects can also enhance the enjoyment and value of blogging.

The first post on my blog was https://jofreitag.wordpress.com/2015/01/24/hello-world/

A key post for the blog is

Could Sprite be a persona doll? https://jofreitag.wordpress.com/2015/01/26/could-sprite-be-a-persona-doll-2/

This post was imported from Sprite’s Site blog to help set the scene for the blog

2015 Edublogs Teacher Challenge Step 2

challengelogo

This month I am participating in the 2015 Edublogs Teacher Challenge

http://teacherchallenge.edublogs.org/personal-blogging/

This series is for educators who want to have their own personal blog where they document their learning, share their teaching practices or use to create a portfolio of their work.
Each week I will be sent emails consisting of a link to the content to read, as well a task to complete as part of the challenge.

STEP 2 related to setting up pages particularly About me and Contact pages

Here is my STEP 2 RESPONSE

I have just added a Contact page to my blog Personas profiles and portraits https://jofreitag.wordpress.com/
It now has 12 pages as there is a separate page for each of the dolls so that they will each be easy to find without having to search through posts or the search bar and each page can be updated easily as I find more information and links to include.

I have created an About Jo page at https://jofreitag.wordpress.com/about/

I have created a new Contact page https://jofreitag.wordpress.com/contact/

Creating the Contact page brought to my mind again my intention to create an About.me online business card and to revisit LinkedIn and decide whether to update my profile there.

2015 Edublogs Teacher Challenge Step 1

challengelogo

This month I am participating in the 2015 Edublogs Teacher Challenge

http://teacherchallenge.edublogs.org/personal-blogging/

This series is for educators who want to have their own personal blog where they document their learning, share their teaching practices or use to create a portfolio of their work.
Each week I will be sent emails consisting of a link to the content to read, as well a task to complete as part of the challenge.

STEP 1 related to setting up the blog and choosing its theme and appearance.
We were advised to check whether the theme we had chosen would be able to be viewed successfully on mobile devices and I was pleased to find that all three of my blogs are mobile friendly.
I have also created a gravatar now so that I have my personal avatar picture which will appear with comments I leave on blogs replacing the nondescript squiggle picture that used to appear.

Here are my responses to the exercises set for Week 1 and the feedback I received

STEP 1 RESPONSE

1) I love The Edublogger because it is packed with information and support
I also like Free Technology for Teachers and Teacher Reboot Camp for the same reason
The blogs that appealed most to me visually were Larry Ferlazzo’s Websites of the day and Primary Tech.

2) I have 3 current blogs all set up using WordPress

Gifted Resources Blog https://giftedresources.wordpress.com/
This is the blog for Gifted Resources which is an information service for teachers, parents and service providers of gifted and 2E twice exceptional students. The theme used for the blog is Twenty Eleven

Sprite’s Site http://spritessite.wordpress.com/
Sprite is a cartoon character developed to illustrate presentations about 2E twice exceptional students who are both gifted and also have learning difficulties or differences
The theme used for the blog is Twenty Eleven

3) My new blog which I will be using for this Challenge
Personas, Profiles and Portraits https://jofreitag.wordpress.com/
The theme I used for the new blog is Oxygen.
So far most of the images for this blog are photos which I have taken myself.
Topics that will be discussed on this blog will include
Persona/Diversity Dolls
Personal story narration
Dr. Maureen Neihart and Dr. George Betts Revised Profiles of the Gifted and Talented 2010
Prof Francoys Gagne Differentiated Model of Giftedness & Talent 2.0
Building gifts into talents: Brief overview of the DMGT 2.0
Gifted and 2E Twice exceptional students (who are both gifted and have a learning disability/difference)
De Bono’s 6 Action Shoes
Dabrowski’s Overexcitabilities
The characters and topics from Sprite’s Site blog depicted as dolls and soft toys

I am hoping to learn more about how to use this theme specially including sharing options, widgets etc.
Thank you very much for this opportunity.
